Medicaid

Medicaid (MediCal in California) is funded and managed jointly by the federal and state governments. It pays for health care for individuals and families with low incomes, or whose medical bills are very high in relation to their income and assets. Eligibility requirements and benefits vary from state to state. Medicaid is the primary payer of nursing home care. A few states also offer some home and community-based long term care services for eligible individuals. These additional services are at the discretion of the state; in other words, they are not mandated by federal law.
