Home Health Care Agencies

Home health agencies provide in-home supportive services that range from skilled nursing care and therapy (occupational, physical, respiratory and speech) to assistance with activities of daily living and housekeeping. This support allows many older people to remain in their own homes instead of moving into a nursing home.

Important: When Medicare patients are discharged from a hospital and need home health care to recover, Medicare will not pay for it unless it is provided by a Medicare-certified agency. However, only about half of the agencies are certified. If you use an agency that is not certified, you will have to pay for your care out of your own pocket.

Many excellent home health care agencies are not certified by Medicare. It isn't because they aren't good enough. Instead, the homemaker and companion services they provide - services their clients need to remain in their own homes - are not covered by Medicare.

Visiting Nurse Associations of America – Visiting Nurse agencies provide skilled nursing care and rehabilitation therapy services that are covered by Medicare. They usually don't provide personal care and homemaker services.
