A part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Health Care Financing Administration has compiled a very useful database of nursing homes across the country. Their goal is to provide understandable information about the performance of every Medicare and Medicaid certified nursing home (about 96% of all nursing homes are certified). Note: Before making any final decision, it is important to visit each of the nursing homes under consideration in addition to using this database.

While comprehensive, their listings are not complete since they include only for-profit facilities that pay an advertising fee and the not-for-profit members of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA). Some AAHSA members also pay an advertising fee. Note: If a facility pays the advertising fee (only about 20% do pay), it is included in the Premium Listing that shows up first when you search their directory. If it doesn't pay an advertising fee, the facility is included in the General Listing which can be found only after reviewing all of the Premium Listings.
